human diseases and drug pharmacology

This assessment is worth 10% of your overall course grade.

Outcome(s) Assessed:

  • Course Outcomes
    • Identify signs and symptoms of diseases documented in health records.

oExplain the fundamental concepts and processes of diseases and/or conditions.

oRelate the causes and mechanisms of disease with the associated diagnosis, treatments, and medications typically prescribed.

oSummarize the importance of consumer safety and drug regulations on prescription medications

oIdentify the actions, interactions, and adverse effects of common drug classifications

Relevant Background Information:

This assessment will examine the pathologies, diagnostic testing, patient presentations, and treatments, including medication use, for conditions related to the immune system and the nervous system. The knowledge and skills learned would allow the student to interpret and apply basic medical information such as lab work, prescription orders, and patient signs and symptoms to a specific pathology/disease that they would see within a patient’s medical chart.

Assessment Purpose:

To prepare the student to interpret basic medical terminology, abbreviations and calculations as it pertains to pharmacology. In addition, the student will be able to identify signs, symptoms, and lab/diagnostic results associated with various system related pathologies/diseases.

Assessment Directions:

For this assessment, you will answer two essay questions and one case study with questions that follow. Provide your answers to the first two essays in well-developed paragraphs of no more than 550 words. Provide your answers to the case study in a well-developed paragraph of 100 – 150 words for each question. Type your responses into a Word document with your name, date, and the title of this assessment at the top of the page.

PART 1:

Essay #1 – Discuss the 7 items found on a prescription drug label and explain why each are essential for consumer safety and how it relates to the 8 “rights” of safe drug administration.

PART 2:

Essay #2 – As you have learned there are many potential side effects and adverse interactions that may present with any medication. Please select two drugs or drug classifications and explain the adverse reactions of each and potential drug interactions. Please note any connections between the drug and the side effects/adverse reactions.

Case Study – Read the case scenario and patient record below then answer the questions that follow in a well-developed paragraph for each of at least 100-150 words.

Ms. X, a 32-year-old Hispanic woman, presents w/CC of intermittent pleuritic chest pain and joint pain of several years’ duration, and recent bilateral facial erythema.Pt denies any hx of accidents. Non-smoker.

A diagnosis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) was made.

Discussion Questions

1.Explain how the disease process and development of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) resulted in the presentation and lab results of Ms. X.Identify specific information from the health record within your explanation.

2.Discuss the complications that might develop for Ms. X.

3.Identify possible plan of care options that may include patient education, treatment options, necessary referral(s) and/or further diagnostic testing for Ms. X

Identify signs and symptoms of diseases documented in health records.

The student provided a complete and accurate description of the development of the condition and/or disease process, and fully integrated information from the patient’s presentation and the related laboratory and/or diagnostic tests.

The student provided a relatively complete and/or accurate description of the development of the condition and/or disease process, but only partially integrated information from the patient’s presentation and the related laboratory and/or diagnostic tests, or made limited errors in the analysis of the patient’s presentation and/or related laboratory diagnostic tests.

The student provided an accurate, but basic description of the development of the condition and/or disease process, but did not accurately integrate information from the patient’s presentation and the related laboratory and/or diagnostic tests.

The student failed to provide an accurate description of the development of the condition and/or disease process.

Identify the actions, interactions, and adverse effects of common drug classifications

The student accurately identifies at least two drugs or drug classifications. The student is able to articulate the possible side effects, adverse effects and possible interactions with accuracy. The student also notes connections between the drug and the side effects based on the action of the drugs.

(At least 100 words per question)

The student identifies two drugs or drug classifications but is unable to clearly articulate possible side effects, adverse effects and possible interactions with accuracy. The student does not note connections between the drug and the side effects based on the action of the drugs.

The student may identify two drugs or drug classifications but does not articulate possible side effects, adverse effects or possible interactions with any accuracy. The student does not speak to the connection between the drug’s mechanism and the side effects associated with the drug.

The student makes little effort to identify two drugs or drug classifications. Most key components such as side effects, adverse effects and possible interactions are not present.
