Now more than ever, healthcare industry needs advanced health practitioners that can demonstrate effective leadership. For this discussion post, Situational leadership theory will be discussed with my own words. I will define the theory, explain how the leadership style can be used in future and provide an example of Situational leadership style.

Situational leadership, is a theory that builds upon the understanding that a leader should be able to adapt individual leadership style to apply in any given situation. The situational leadership model is the management of individual behavior in the given situation (Sousa & Rocha, 2019). Nurses are known for their adaptive behavior and ability to multitask and be assertive. Situational leadership remind me of the adaptive qualities that Nurses demonstrate. Being able to switch gears and apply the style of leadership that would result in best leading outcome given the situation.

Future leaders to lead our ever-changing demand of health care is becoming more important. This Pandemic has allowed me to observe, and interpret my upcoming role as an Advanced Practice Nurse with a wide lens. Now more than ever being able to apply all leadership style for effective, efficient care that is transparent and provides clear vision for people to be led in the right direction is vital.

I am the Lead Administrator in my current professional role within Aesthetic setting. I find myself utilizing the situation leadership style to demonstrate most effective leadership based on situation and individuals that are involved. To be a successful and effective leader in my field I must keep in mind, quality of performance, patient satisfaction as well as a positive work environment for staff to perform at their best. The recipe I found to be effective in fulfilling staff and patient needs has been the situational leadership style. Staffing shortage can often lead to staff feeling overwhelmed or rushed which can decrease performance and quality of care. Assessing the situation, knowing the strength and weaknesses of all team members allows for affective team approach to step in, reroute assignment for the day while prioritizing the care provided.

In conclusion, situational leadership style is the leadership theory that is applied to practice now and in the future as our health care demand rises and one not one approach fits every situation. Regardless of the setting an Advanced Practice Nurse is in, the situational leadership style can be practiced effectively.
