Learning Technology

Learning technologies have certainly come along way. There is no standard of learning only being subjected to face to face lectures. We now have options that take learning to an entirely different level. Technology has now soared to a level of advancement. You have the option of signing onto a computer and sitting in a virtual classroom. Students are required to be computer saavy and keep up with podcast and web based classes (Campos-DeCarvalho, Railka-DeSouza, & Coelho Ramalho Vasconselos Morais, 2017). When dealing with on-line class settings the instructor is able to reach all learners as they are usually taking the courses at their own pace and assuring that the assignments are turned in on time. Does this type of learning continue with innovative processes? I believe so it allows for a more structured learning experience and the individual to be structured and it welcomes autonomy but at the same time it forces the student to learn and inspire on individual basis.

Faculty Experience

The faculty experiences collective and collaborative learning. While many classes are conducted on-line the instructor must have the potential to get the information across without face to face meetings and sometimes that can be difficult depending on the type of learners that are assigned in the on-line classroom setting. If the students are geographically dispersed it is not always apparent to the other learners and should not be pointed out. All learners should be treated equal and made to feel like a part of the group. As technology continues to advance the instructors are recording lectures and allowing the students to view in the privacy of their home (Billings, & Halstead, 2016). The students that may have issues with having the technology available in the homes still have the option of attending classes in the face to face setting. The use of blended learning has become relatively important and as we move forward with technology things are going to continue to advance.

When faculty are teaching distant learning students it is helpful that they have the technology to use the information they have to share with the students. When the faculty can share information about the topics and objectives for the week through the learning services this is amazing because students in the group can be from all over the world. Since in different countries and different cultures we perform and value different things in different manners it is important that we share this with each other. When students from the different geographical locations work together it helps from them to figure out how to manage time better and make sure they are making the best out of their resources. According to Massy (2015) “Across American higher education the lure of the new information technologies remains as uncertain as it is unsettling. While few doubt that information technology (IT) has the potential to enhance teaching and learning, there is no agreement on how that technology should be used to boost academic productivity–or whether such an increase is in itself a valid goal if its enhancement means substituting technology for the more traditional, labor intensive rhythms of higher education.” This information is huge because with technology the sky is the limit as to how we can get the students to interact and be able to offer them more opportunities.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Defend your position.

“The use of different types of technology assists the teacher in helping learners meet their individual needs and styles of learning. Technology has the potential for making the teaching-learning process more convenient, accessible, and stimulating.”

I do agree with the statement about the different use of technology and helping individual learners meet their needs of their learning styles. I think because people can remember information in different manners that is a huge part of the teaching process. Some say that it is more convenient which in some ways it may be, but the educator still must put the presentation together on the materials presented. According to the US Department of Education (2015) “Used to support both teaching and learning, technology infuses classrooms with digital learning tools, such as computers and hand held devices; expands course offerings, experiences, and learning materials; supports learning 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; builds 21st century skills; increases student engagement and motivation; and accelerates learning.” This is important if we need to get our students engaged in the learning process then I do not think it is a bad thing at all. As the world continues to change so does the health care system. Electronics are here to stay and if we can find interactive materials for students to use which will help them to retain the information then I do not see a problem with this. In an article from Laura Devaney (2016) states “Using smartphones and tablets, educators and administrators have at their fingertips a variety of tools, strategies and digital coaches designed to make their instructional and organizational goals a reality.” I think if we can push our students and hold them accountable but still give them the resources needed to make education successful for them that is what is most important.

agree that technology has the potential for making the teaching-learning process more convenient, stimulating and accessible. Students today are comfortable with technology and have access to technology. Students today have and know how to use laptops, Ebooks and IPhones and often have more than one device. Having these devices allows the learning process to be more accessible. Students also stay up-to-date with the newest technologies that come available. Technology can connect the student and faculty through virtual classrooms, webinars, podcasts, apps for their phones, reference software and numerous drug guides (Billings & Halstead, 2016). According to Bastable (2014), more than 2500 colleges and universities in the United States offer online courses in the health profession and related higher education programs. These different devices have improved accessibility and also provided a more stimulating learning environment because of the variety of tools available.

I also agree that different technologies assist the teacher in meeting the individual needs and learning styles of the student. In a research study by Schell, (2004), software was introduced to facilitate the learning needs of the student. The project allowed students, as future educators, to individualize their teaching based on the learning styles of the student. Using this computer program as a supplement to the classroom helped accomodate more students and multiple learning styles even when faculty was limited.

Technology can meet individual styles of learning in several ways. For example, the linguistic learner would benefit from online recorded lectures and the posting of comments like in a discussion board. Computer simulation programs of critical thinking exercises benefit the logical learner. Naturalistic learners benefit from the variety of technology available because these learners benefit from learning environments that offer variety and change within their environment (Reynolds, n.d.).
