Topic 5 DQ1 response to Amanda Brummel
Question Description
Professional nursing organizations support the field of nursing by providing necessary information, advocating for nurses and patients, and being a reliable tool. “The ANA represents about 3.6 million nurses and is the largest professional organization in this country. The ANA provides a vast amount of information, making it a valuable tool for nurses,” (Helbig, 2018). Professional nursing organizations, such as the American Nurses Association (ANA), is available to help aid nurses within the medical field and nursing practice. When looking at the American Nurses Association, their site provides links for practices and policies, certifications, membership opportunities, organizational programs, and education and events that allow nurses to get involved. “Nurses are becoming specialized in care through the many professional certifications that are offered by the ANA,” (Helbig, 2018). Nursing organizations allow nurses to be involved in the world of nursing by starting conversations and allowing possibilities for greater opportunities.
The value professional nursing organizations have in advocacy and activism related to patient care is the primary goal of all patients receiving safe quality care. According to the American Nurses Association (2018), “The American Nurses Association (ANA) believes that advocacy is the key to advancing nursing, and invites all members to unite to drive forward health care change.” Nurses advocate for their patients, and professional nursing organizations advocate for nurses along with the patients. “They support the nurse by raising awareness to problems nurses face. The ANA creates initiatives that raise awareness for the public, and legislators in the state and the federal government. Each of these issues is important and ultimately associated with patients, patient care, and providing a patient-centered safe environment,” (Helbig, 2018). This is the biggest action of advocacy and activism a nursing organization could do by raising awareness to problems nurses face which in return improve quality patient care. The behind the scenes work organizations such as the ANA perform protects nurses and patients on a political level as well. “Each year, ANA’s State Government Affairs program monitors over 1,000 nursing and health care related bills across all states, examining priority issues and trends,” (American Nurses Association, 2018). Professional nursing organizations ensure advocacy for the patients and nurses by performing actions such as monitoring bills and examining priorities.
