RNA Structure and Functions

Ribonucleic acid: any of a class of single stranded molecules transcribed from DNA in the cell nucleus or in the mitochondrion orchloroplast, containing along the strand a linear sequence of nucleotide bases that is identical with that of DNA except for the substitution of the sugar ribose for deoxyribose and the substitution of the nucleotide base uracil forthymine.

During protein synthesis Ribonucleic Acid (regularly referred to as RNA) plays a few very important roles as Messenger, Transfer, and Ribosomal. Ribonucleic acid only consists of one sole nucleotide chain, and it is not held together by complementary base pairs only in particular where the molecule folds back onto itself (Saladin).

Messenger RNA: a single-stranded molecule of RNA that is synthesized in the nucleus from a DNA template and then enters the cytoplasm, where its genetic code specifies the amino acid sequence for protein synthesis (Dictionary.com, 2018). The role of Messenger RNA also referred to as mRNA is to carry the genetic information that had been copied from DNA (Lodish H, Berk A, Zipursky SL, et al. 2000).

Transfer RNA: A small RNA molecule, consisting of a strand of nucleotides folded into a clover-leaf shape, that picks up an unattached amino acid within the cell cytoplasm and conveys it to the ribosome for protein synthesis (Dictionary.com, 2018). Transfer RNA also known as tRNA is responsible for reading the the code and carrying the amino acid inside the forming proteins (Chemistry Libretext, 2014).

Ribosomal RNA: A type of RNA, distinguished by its length and abundance, functioning in protein synthesis as a component of ribosomes (Dictionary.com, 2018). Ribosomal RNA (rRNA) plays its part as being a vehicle that carries enzymes that are needed for protein synthesis. The rRNA attaches itself to a mRNA and offers a stabilized structure holding everything together during the synthesizing process (Chemistry Libretext, 2014).
