Nursing leadership is about putting the interests of patients and working closely with other healthcare providers to improve the care of patients while enhancing the performance of healthcare givers.Nurse leaders/managers need to be knowledgeable in management, communication and teamwork expertise. They also need to be informed about health economics, fiscal and evidence based results. Nursing leadership should be quick to make proactive changes based on a changing environment.
Three elements required for leadership: authority, power and influence. Nursing leadership should therefore use more influence and less power as well authority. It is therefore pertinent to note that motivation, persuasion and the ability to negotiate and appreciate are complete extremes with power wielders.
Nursing leaders/managers should therefore adopt a three-prong approach to create a compassionate healthcare setting such as; leading from the front, developing professional ties and nurturing by instruction.
Leadership entails providing a good workplace environment that enable individuals to perform their tasks particularly when they experience challenges and any kind of change. Nurse leader/manager should empower patients in a way that they allow them to take part in decision making. When health services are appropriately managed, they lead to fulfillment of patients’ requirements.
Eliminating hierarchy and capacity to operate in new environments enable health care institutions put adequate use available resources while creating more value on nurses and patients. Further application of transformational leadership enable nurse leader to increase their responsibility as educators or advocates.
